Professor of Parasitology at the University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane, Professor Barker has been studying ticks and other ectoparasites at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, for over 25 years.
Recent and current activities include:
(i) a monograph (670 pages), with his wife Dayana on the “Ticks of Australasia”; and
(ii) research directed to ensuring supply of Australian paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) for the production of tick anti-sera and new and improved immunological therapeutics to treat tick-paralysis in dogs.
The Seminar will cover the following topics:
• The Australian Eastern paralysis tick (how it ticks) and other ticks.
• Effects of paralysis tick toxin – short and long term.
• Current Treatment.
• Research work being conducted at the University of Queensland (funded by DQ).
• Warning Signs and When to Seek Help
