For Immediate Release: 4 June 2008

Dr Peter Higgins

Dogs NSW takes pleasure in announcing the appointment of Dr Peter Higgins as our Media Spokesperson. Peter has excellent credentials in Veterinary Science, Marketing, dog care, and Communications and also has extensive experience in media including TV, radio, and print journalism.

Dr Higgins’s role will be to publicise Dogs NSW and the virtues of purebred dogs as well as our organisation’s aim of promoting responsible dog ownership amongst the general community.

Peter has a complete media background and has worked in the media for 22 years. He has worked both in front of the camera and behind the scenes on many TV shows such as On the Land, Terry Willesee Tonight, Off the Dish, the TODAY Show, plus many more in his various roles as host, reporter, writer and veterinarian. He has also been set veterinarian for movies and television shows.

His expertise in radio is extensive, as he has hosted his own radio programmes, co-hosted and contributed to many shows as well as doing voice over and commentary work. He has been a contributor of 2UE, 2GB, and ABC radio for 20 years including hosting his own Shows.

Whilst Peter’s strengths obviously lie in Broadcast media, he also has expertise as a features writer, columnist or sectional editor for such publications as NOW magazine and New Idea and is now currently writing for Dogs NSW monthly magazine. He is also an author of two books, ‘Pets as Pals’ and ‘Petcare.’

His involvement in the dog world has been quite diverse, from his many roles in the media to that of a veterinary surgeon, show steward, dog breeder, exhibitor, show commentator, and spokesperson.

Peter commenced showing dogs in 1985 and quickly became involved also in stewarding and Dogs NSW committees. He is not only the official veterinarian, but also commentator for the past 17 years for the Royal Easter Show and continues to lecture to dog judge candidates as well as veterinary students at Sydney University.

His community service work as spokesperson and patron of a number of societies and clubs continues. He was spokesperson for the Australian Veterinary Association for 5 years and also stood on the Board of the Australian Red Cross, Animal Welfare League, Lost Dogs Home, and Royal Guide Dog Association. Peter was one of the initiators of the first organised pet visitation programmes in Australia – the Outreach Programme for the elderly, and the first pet placement programme - Pets As Therapy. Early in his veterinary career Peter was awarded a Clinical Proficiency Medal for Veterinary Medicine and, later, a Global Leadership Award. His most recent recognition is the prestigious, Contributor of the Year for the Royal Agricultural Society; an award that has only been given to 14 people in the history of the Royal Easter Show.

We are confident that Peter’s long time association with Dogs NSW coupled with his new role with us will heighten Dogs NSW’s profile amongst the general community and enable us to impart the proactive activities that our organisation, members, and clubs are doing about canine welfare, serving the community and our dedication to improving purebred dogs. This will enforce Dogs NSW message to the world of educating owners and being responsible for our canine companions.
