LEGISLATION AND DOGS

Legislation and our pets effects us in the home and in public.

Legislation is to ensure that the safety of our animals is accounted for as with the safety of the community. Legislation plays a part in how you keep the dog at your home, when out in public, renting a property and owning a dog, breeds that might not be allowed to be bred in our country.

What is legislation?

A proposed or enacted law or group of laws (source: www.dictionary.com). The legislation directly related to our pet animals in NSW is the NSW Companion Animals Act. If you are not aware of what is involved in relation to your pet and the law, go to the Department of Local Government website which can inform you. Please be informed that this will take you away from this site.

It is also important that you know your own councils regulations when it comes to pets. Most councils have Companion Animal Officers to help you stay safe with your dog in the community.

Recent changes to the NSW Companion Animals Act

The Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Kerry Hickey MP has met with our Officers. He has confirmed that the only breeds which will be banned in NSW are those listed below and which the Australian Government banned from importation into Australia in 1991:

  • American Pit Bulls
  • Pit Bull Terriers
  • Fila Brazililieros
  • Dogo Argentinas
  • Japanese Tosas
