First Australian Junior Handler Final
Dogs NSW had the honour of hosting the first Australian Junior handler final under the new ANKC banner. This event was held at the Spring fair on Saturday 21st November 2009. The final was listed for midday but due to the forecast of extremely hot weather the Committee of the Junior Handler Working Party decided to run the event at 8.00 a.m.
Regrettably not all our States were represented at this final as the Northern Territory and the ACT were unable to run State finals for this year. The winner’s from the other six State all came to Erskine Park to take part in our final with the winner being awarded a trip to Crufts to take part in the World Challenge. This trip has been funded by the generosity of Advance and many of our Australian All Breeds Clubs, who have made donations between $25.00 & $500.00.
The Judge for the Final was Ms Ann Ingram from Ireland, who was on the Spring Fair panel. Ann was born into the dog world with a mother, who bred Boxers and a father who was a professional handler and a terrier man. Ann handled her first English Champion at the tender age of 14 years and started Judging in 1968. As part of her assignment Ann was sent the ANKC Junior Handler Manual and it was very obvious that she had taken the time to study our rules and judged the final, well within our Australian rules.

The Finalists were:-
Natasha Weraduwage – New South Wales
Melissa Watt – Queensland
Brittany Farrell – South Australia
Kayla Heenan - Tasmania
Tayla Wright - Victoria
Michelle Waterhouse – Western Australia
The winners of the final are:-

Australian Winner was Miss Natasha Weraduwage from NSW

Runner Up was Miss Mellissa Watt from QLD
At the competition of Judging Ann commented on how good she thought all our finalists were and because of this had to really get down to the small errors that most of the public would not have seen. She also felt that our Junior Handlers could compete any where in the World and would do us proud.
This was the first Australian Final and special thanks must go out to all the State Junior Handler Working Parties who work so hard to make this happen. I am certain that this event will become the highlight of the Juniors handlers Australia wide and we wish Natasha all the best at Crufts in March 2010 and may she do us all proud.
And to all the young handlers out there remember if you work hard it could be you going to the UK to represent your country.
The finals were videoed and copies will be available to interested parties at $20.00 plus postage.
