Dog of the Year / Puppy of the Year 2010
The 13th NSW Showdog and 18th NSW Puppy of the Year was hosted by the Dogs NSW Complex Fundraising Committee on the evening of Saturday 23 January 2010. The weather forecast was for extreme temperatures, with a late change. Concerned about the effect of this heat on the dogs as well as the judges and workers, the Committee made the decision on the Friday morning to delay the start of the evening until 7pm. Exhibitors were notified by email or telephone and the decision received overwhelming support, with most exhibitors heeding the Committee’s advice and delaying their arrival on the grounds until the temperature had begun to fall.
Rings 1 and 5 at Erskine Park were joined and decorated with fairy lights, ready to welcome the record entry of 93 “Best in Show” winning dogs and 111 Puppies. The Proplan Canopy in the corner of the ring displayed a magnificent variety of prizes, promising a profitable night for the winners. By the time the mystery judges were announced and the evening got underway, exhibitors and their supporters were in party mode, ready to celebrate their success from 2009 and toast 2010 in style. Judges for this year were Ms C Camac (Vic), Mrs L Buckley (ACT), Mr R Clelend (SA), Mr M LeCussan (NSW), Mr R Curtis OAM (NSW) and Mr G Doyle (NZ). Three judges were drawn by ballot for each heat as well as the quarter and semi finals, with all six judges officiating when the final four dogs entered the ring for the final.
The ultimate success and title of 2009 NSW Show Dog of the Year was awarded to D & A Bowe’s Fox Terrier (Smooth), Grand Ch Wyninebah Checkmate, closely followed by L Stalhandske’s Saluki, Grand Ch Padtheway Schiram Qalif. 2009 NSW Puppy of the Year was awarded to J & R Mirto’s Pointer, Chesterhope Dangerus Liason With Hipoint (imp NZ), whilst the Runner-up went to G & S Edmund’s British Bulldog, Bratrice Snap Shot.
The two winners were presented with magnificent framed rosettes as well as $500 and $250 cash respectively. In addition, those achieving success on the night were presented with an amazing array of trophies from our sponsor’s: Purina Proplan, Col Western Sheds, Frozen Puppies, Animal Images, Big Mobs Websites, Naturally Wagging, Stop-Snakes, Kannex Dog Beds, Dog News Australia, National Dog, Delete, Showaquipment & Genetic Technologies.
The Committee would like to thank the sponsor’s for their generosity and hope that those who participated in the evening will reward these sponsors throughout the year by giving them their support. We would also like to thank the exhibitors for the record entry and their overwhelming support when the decision was made to delay the start of the evening. Thanks also to our excellent MC Don Day and highly efficient Stewards Christina Rafton and Robyn Hopkins – they ensure the smooth running of the evening. Lastly we would like to congratulate the winners and wish all those who entered a successful 2010.
