FIREWORKS
As in previous years, there is no doubt that the usual celebrations that are conducted will feature fireworks displays, accompanied by the individuals who seem to think that hey can create a bigger spectacle by chucking them about at random. Organised displays are fine but fireworks used haphazardly have been the cause of many random fire and personal injuries.
These people should be aware that you need a one day permit from workcover, which is not easily obtained, before they can purchase "bangers", the fire brigade and local council also have to be notified and last but not least a safe place to let them off - this does not mean in the street.
Organised fire works displays can be quite spectacular to humans, but what about the animals.
Ask a pound keeper or vet the day after the event and they will tell you about the effect the impact of the loud explosions can have on our animals. Take the dog for instance, the hearing of the dog is said to be at least a 40+ threshold over the human ear.
Consider also that there is not one loud bang but many, add to this those articles that whistle and scream and the fact that dogs may be out in the open, subjected to the flashing lights. All this can render them a quivering wreck - this is not part of the their environment and many take days to recover.
Dogs NSW is asking you to give your dog a place that they can feel secure -the laundry, a shed (preferably without windows) or ask the advice of your vet and please make sure they can't get out!
Some dogs suffer greatly from hysteria at this time and will go to great lengths to escape to some place that will provide the security you should have given them and often suffer severe injuries in doing so.
If your dog does escape and you have looked under your house and your neighbours, go to the pound and keep going or phone at least once a week to see if he is there.
The reunion will be well worth the effort!
